I'm going to say this to start. I think it's some grade A bullshit how many people probably pass over my RP lists simply because my length is only in the multi-hundreds of words per side, rather than the multi-thousands. However, this is not a call out. Instead it's an explanation.
I'm going to explain why I don't do Novel lengths anymore. Yes. Believe it or not, I actually did.
The simple reason is that it's a lot of nothing. Novel length posts can work. Okay? They totally can. It's just more often than not people I've roleplayed with who write over a thousand words per side, it becomes clear that they only accomplish that length by adding a ton of "fluff" to sort of boost their numbers up.
Literally every, "Novel" Style Partner I've had will have a post where half of it is just non-sense, that adds nothing to the RP. It's like one time this partner I had spent five paragraphs describing her characters hair. A guy partner I had would make posts of over 2,000 words in length just talking about his character's feelings.
Okay...so how does that take the RP anywhere? That's my problem. For me...it doesn't. I get replies like that, and my first instinct is to try and filter out all of the stuff that's meaningless, and look for "What can I actually make a reply to?"
And I'm not bashing on details! I love details, but I don't need to see an entire post about your OC's feelings, when you could've summed it up in 1 or 2 paragraphs.
Going back to my first part, I really do think it's some judgmental bullshit about how picky "Novel" roleplayers are on length. Some of the best friends I've made are people who write like 1/5th of what I feel comfortable putting out. I saw that they were into series that I was into, and so instead of judging them prematurely I reached out, to be friends. Add in here that more than one of them has since improved their writing skills, because they wanted to be a better partner for me to have. I'm sure that many Novel Roleplayers would find some great friends if the majority of them weren't so bitter about length.
I mean if there's a series you love, and the one person who can RP it only writes 400 words per side, is it that big of a deal-breaker?
Anyway this is not a call out. I'm not calling out anyone in specific. Just my personal thoughts, and opinion towards Novel length roleplayers. I do stress this is just my personal opinion. You're free to agree, disagree, half-agree, not care, whatever.
I just really needed to get this off my chest.
