I have been thinking about this a lot, and the way that female characters are treated in a lot of action based stuff really bothers me.
Since it is bothering me, I have to bother everyone else!
Now my problem I have is whenever writers make a female character that is really hyped up as being some total badass only to constantly need rescuing,or support.
Especially when the male characters never go through anything like that.
Batman in a completely canon storyline got his back broken by Bane. This was a serious, long story line that was meant to be taken seriously.
The Killing Joke was never meant to be canon. It was supposed to be a little spin off, side story. A story that should not have even been taken seriously, and yet Barbara was in a wheelchair for what like 20 or 30 years?
Spider-Man goes through a lot of crap, but everything always gets retconned to be in his favor. It's like he gets his body stolen by Doc Ock, but now he's back to in control of his body again.
Gwen in the reality where she got the powers instead, got de-powered, and as far as I can tell still doesn't have her powers back.
What bothers me the most is that a lot of these writers will talk about themselves as if they are somehow champions of women's rights.
"We decided to make our main character a woman! We wanted to show everyone that women can be just as tough as men are!"
Well there's nothing inherently wrong with that, but your whole point there kind of backfires on itself when your supposedly strong, badass, woman constantly gets her shit kicked in.
I just wish that these writers would take a moment to ask themselves "If I was writing a man would I treat him like this?" If the answer is no you wouldn't, then don't do it to your female characters either.
End rant.
