Limits and why it should be discussed before roleplaying

Okay, so I've seen people listing limits on here, and I've been on other sites. I have asked the Roleplayer if they have any limits. I have ran into some people that told me "What do you mean by limits?" I honestly haven't really found a good way to explain what I mean when I ask people for their limits. I've also had a Roleplayer tell me that "I'll let you know if enough is enough." Have you ever ran into people like that? 

Another thing is.. I think limits should always be discussed before starting a roleplay so people won't be uncomfortable while roleplaying. What really irritates me though is, as I said earlier, about someone saying "I'll tell you when enough is enough." That's really not giving me any limits to avoid in a roleplay. I am definitely one that will respect your limits and will roleplay with you even if you do have limits. I don't want anyone to be uncomfortable so that's exactly why I ask if they had any limits.

Huh. I guess I never thought that people wouldn't know what limits where.

Anyway, I'm typically one of those people that advertises the whole "I'll let you know when I get uncomfortable," but I do have limits that I won't even touch. A lot of the people I've roleplayed with are people like that as well. 

I don't know, I'm still blown away at the fact there are people who've never heard of the term limits.

But right, I do think limits are something that should be talked about before even exchanging information. That way, if you know your limits are going to cause conflict down the line, you can make a decision on whether or not it's going to affect your roleplay in the long run. If you know you want your roleplay to involve, as an example, violence, but your partner doesn't want to write anything violent, are you going to want to roleplay with that person? No? There, now you know ahead of time and can avoid everyone's feelings getting hurt by either finding something else or simply saying that you don't think the roleplay will ultimately work out.
